Pieter Huys, a Flemish painter active in Antwerp during the sixteenth century, produced this work in 1577. It belongs to a tradition of moralising, fantastic imagery that gained popularity in the Low Countries following the success of Hieronymus Bosch. The composition depicts the ascetic Saint Anthony, positioned on the left, as he encounters a chaotic assembly of hybrid creatures and demons. These figures represent the various vices and distractions intended to test the saint's resolve.

The scene is divided into distinct zones of activity. In the foreground, the saint remains composed while surrounded by grotesque entities, including a woman offering a platter and various animal-human hybrids. The background reveals a burning landscape, suggesting a hellish environment, while the right side of the panel shows a body of water populated by further bizarre, mechanical, and organic monstrosities. Huys employs a dark, moody palette, punctuated by the glow of fires and the pale skin of the central figures, to create a sense of unease.
