A dreamlike composition by Sabin Balasa, featuring spectral figures within a stone temple, rendered in deep violets and luminous amber tones.
Sabin Balasa, a Romanian painter known for his distinctively ethereal and cosmic approach to figurative art, created this work as a meditation on memory and time. The composition features a series of weathered stone columns that frame a glowing, amber-toned interior. Within this space, three translucent, spectral figures appear to float, their forms merging with the light. The contrast between the cold, textured purple foreground and the warm, luminous background creates a sense of distance and mystery.
Balasa often employed a technique that prioritised smooth, almost airbrushed transitions, which gives his subjects a dreamlike quality. The figures here lack sharp definition, suggesting they are manifestations of thought or recollection rather than physical beings. The stone structures, marked by cracks and age, provide a grounding element that anchors the otherwise weightless scene. This juxtaposition of the ancient, decaying architecture and the ageless, radiant spirits is a recurring theme in his body of work.
His style draws from a blend of classical training and a personal, visionary aesthetic. He frequently explored themes of human existence, mythology, and the cosmos. By placing these figures within a temple-like structure, he invites the viewer to consider the space where memories reside. The colour palette is dominated by deep violets and blues, which are punctuated by the golden glow of the central figures. This choice of colour creates a nocturnal atmosphere, further enhancing the sense of introspection. The work does not rely on narrative clarity, but rather on the emotional resonance of its visual elements. It is a piece that invites quiet observation, reflecting the artist's interest in the intersection of the physical world and the internal life of the mind.
