This miniature painting originates from the Tuti-nama, or Tales of a Parrot, a collection of fifty-two stories told by a parrot to its mistress over successive nights. The scene depicts the thirty-second night, illustrating the narrative of three men who find themselves confined within a cave after a large boulder obstructs the entrance. The composition is characteristic of the Mughal school, which synthesised Persian aesthetic traditions with local Indian influences during the mid-sixteenth century.
The figures are positioned within a rocky, cavernous setting, their gestures conveying a sense of supplication and distress. The artist employs a flattened perspective, typical of manuscript illumination, where the geological formations are rendered as stylised, rounded shapes in shades of mauve, pink, and blue. These rocks surround the central figures, creating a sense of enclosure that mirrors the narrative tension of the story. The inclusion of delicate trees and a distant horizon line provides a contrast to the immediate confinement of the cave.
