A genre painting by Pietro Longhi depicting a Venetian woman inspecting fabric with a tailor, capturing the domestic life of the eighteenth-century elite.
Pietro Longhi, a Venetian painter active during the eighteenth century, is recognised for his documentation of the daily lives of the Venetian aristocracy. In this work, titled The Tailor, Longhi captures a domestic scene within a private residence. The composition focuses on a woman seated in a gown of golden hue, observing a length of dark, patterned fabric held up for her inspection by a tailor. A maid stands behind the seated woman, while a young child plays with a small dog in the foreground. The setting is a wood-panelled room, decorated with a framed portrait on the wall and a fireplace to the left.
Longhi’s approach to this scene is observational. He avoids the grand historical or mythological themes common in the art of his time, preferring to record the fashions, social interactions, and material culture of the Venetian elite. The lighting is soft, directing the viewer's attention to the textures of the clothing and the interaction between the figures. The palette is dominated by muted browns and deep shadows, which contrast with the lighter tones of the woman's dress and the child's attire. This painting provides a glimpse into the domestic rituals of the period, specifically the process of commissioning bespoke garments. Longhi’s work is often compared to the genre paintings of his contemporaries, yet his style remains distinct in its focus on the quiet, often mundane aspects of life in Venice. The inclusion of the small dog and the child adds a sense of informality to the scene, suggesting a moment captured in a private home rather than a staged portrait. This piece remains a record of eighteenth-century social customs and the sartorial interests of the time.
