A geometric abstract painting by Hilma af Klint, 'The Swan, No. 17' explores themes of duality and balance through contrasting colours and shapes within a circular composition set against a red background.
Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist and mystic whose abstract paintings predate the work of Kandinsky and Mondrian. She believed her art was commissioned by spiritual guides, and her paintings were meant to convey complex spiritual and philosophical ideas. Af Klint worked in relative obscurity during her lifetime, stipulating that her abstract work not be exhibited until 20 years after her death, as she felt the world was not ready for it. Her work has since gained considerable recognition. 'The Swan, No. 17' is part of a series exploring duality and balance. The painting features a large circle dominating the composition, divided into contrasting colours and shapes. The left side of the circle is split between black and white, while the right side contains blue, yellow, and pink sections. The background is a solid red, which accentuates the central image. The painting's simple geometric forms and symbolic colours create a sense of harmony and tension, reflecting af Klint's interest in spiritual concepts.
