Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings are considered among the first abstract works in Western art history. She produced a body of work that predates the more widely known abstract paintings of Kandinsky and Mondrian. Klint believed that she was acting as a medium, channeling spiritual messages into her art. Her paintings often explore themes of spirituality, theosophy, and the interconnectedness of the universe. She specified that her abstract works should not be shown until 20 years after her death. Her work has gained significant recognition since the 1980s. 'The Swan No. 16' is part of a series exploring duality and transformation. The composition features concentric circles bisected vertically. One half presents a cool palette of blue and red, while the other half is rendered in soft pinks. The background is a solid, matte black, which accentuates the geometric forms.
