A satirical 1842 lithograph by Honoré Daumier, depicting a weary Hercules performing the mundane task of cleaning the Augean stables.
This lithograph is part of the series Histoire Ancienne, published in the French periodical Le Charivari in 1842. Honoré Daumier, a master of social and political commentary, turns his attention to classical mythology to mock the pretensions of his contemporary society. In this print, the legendary hero Hercules is depicted not as a divine figure of strength, but as a weary, paunchy labourer tasked with the monumental chore of cleaning the Augean stables.
Daumier employs his characteristic lithographic technique, using expressive, gestural lines to define the heavy, sagging form of the hero. The composition is stark, focusing on the physical exertion of the figure against the backdrop of the stable. The humour lies in the juxtaposition of the epic, heroic narrative with the mundane, domestic reality of manual labour. Hercules leans heavily on his shovel, his expression one of resignation rather than triumph.
By stripping away the idealised beauty typically associated with classical subjects, Daumier brings the myth down to earth. The print reflects the artist's keen ability to observe human frailty and the absurdity of life. The caption below the image further adds to the satirical tone, commenting on the difficulty of the task and the subjective nature of taste. This work demonstrates Daumier's skill in using caricature to critique the cultural obsession with classical themes, suggesting that even the greatest heroes are subject to the drudgery of everyday existence. The print remains a fine example of nineteenth-century French graphic art, capturing the wit and critical eye of one of the most prolific caricaturists of the era.
