A detailed Victorian oil-colour print by George Baxter depicting a soldier's emotional departure from his family in a snowy landscape.
George Baxter, a pioneer of colour printing in the nineteenth century, produced this work using his patented process of oil-colour printing. This method involved an initial steel plate for the key lines, followed by multiple wood blocks to apply individual colours. The result is a highly detailed image that mimics the appearance of a finished oil painting while allowing for mass production.
The scene depicts a poignant narrative common in Victorian genre art. A soldier, wearing a tall bearskin cap, prepares to depart, bidding farewell to his family in a snowy, rural setting. The composition balances the emotional weight of the departure with the cold, wintry environment. A woman embraces the soldier, while an older man offers a gift, and a small child stands nearby. The inclusion of an elderly woman seated with a basket adds to the domestic atmosphere of the scene.
Baxter prints were popular among the middle classes during the mid-Victorian period. They provided an accessible way to own art that possessed both narrative depth and technical precision. The winter setting, with its bare trees and soft light, demonstrates Baxter's ability to render atmospheric conditions through his complex layering of ink. The print remains a representative example of the commercial and artistic ambitions of the era, where technical innovation met the public appetite for sentimental and moralising imagery.
