Painted circa 1900, Émile Bernard's 'The Smoking Hashish' depicts a young man smoking a long pipe. The work reflects Bernard's interest in non-Western cultures and his experimentation with simplified forms.
Émile Bernard (1868-1941) was a French Post-Impressionist painter, art critic, and writer, best known for his association with artists like Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh. He developed a style known as Cloisonnism, characterised by bold forms separated by dark outlines, similar to medieval cloisonné enamel work. Bernard's theories contributed to the Symbolist movement. He spent time in Egypt at the turn of the century. There, he painted several portraits of local people. 'The Smoking Hashish', painted circa 1900, depicts a young man reclining on a patterned divan. He wears a striped robe and head covering. He is shown smoking a long pipe. The composition is relatively flat, with less emphasis on traditional perspective. The colour palette is muted, dominated by browns, creams, and blacks. The subject's gaze is direct, engaging the viewer. The work reflects Bernard's interest in non-Western cultures and his experimentation with simplified forms and symbolic content.
