This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga belongs to the series Fashionable Monthly Visits to Sacred Places in the Four Seasons. The scene depicts a street-side stall selling insect cages, a popular summer pastime in Edo-period Japan. Two women stand before the vendor, examining the small, decorative cages with interest. A third figure, holding a round fan, observes the interaction. Kiyonaga is recognised for his tall, graceful figures, a departure from the more compact proportions favoured by his predecessors. His work captures the refined aesthetic of the urban merchant class during the late eighteenth century.
The composition employs a balanced arrangement of figures against a simplified architectural backdrop. The artist uses clean, fluid lines to define the folds of the kimonos and the delicate structures of the insect cages.
