Edvard Munch's 'The Sick Child' captures the emotional intensity of grief and loss, depicting his sister's struggle with tuberculosis. The painting's muted palette and expressive brushwork convey a sense of sorrow and psychological distress.
Edvard Munch's series of paintings titled 'The Sick Child' (1885-1926) are a set of six paintings and numerous studies in oil and other media. They depict his sister Johanne Sophie's losing battle with tuberculosis, from which she died in 1877 at the age of 15. Munch returned to this painful subject repeatedly over more than four decades, using it as a means to explore his grief and feelings of loss. The various versions are in different collections, including the Gothenburg Museum of Art and the Tate in London. The painting shows a young girl with striking red hair, propped up on pillows in a bed. She is turned towards a dark figure, presumably her grieving mother or aunt, who is hunched over in despair. The colour palette is dominated by muted greens, reds, and blacks, contributing to the overall atmosphere of sorrow and illness. The brushwork is loose and expressive, typical of Munch's style, conveying a sense of raw emotion and psychological distress. The composition is intimate, drawing the viewer into the intensely personal scene.
