Description
the Severn Estuary opens under apricot light, where a dark suspension bridge spans gleaming tidal water and the distant shore recedes into plum-coloured evening.
Broad mudflats catch the last warm light beneath the bridge towers, while long reflections stretch across the shallow water. Reed-coloured grasses darken the near bank, and layered rose and mauve clouds soften the far horizon. The bridge's upright cables bring a measured rhythm to the open reach of water.
People who know the Severn Estuary may recognise the broad tide and the changing colour of its banks at day's end. Its wide crossing and exposed shoreline make a familiar marker for journeys between the Bristol Channel and the river country beyond.
