A satirical etching by James Ensor depicting the sin of Avarice through grotesque, distorted figures and a dark, agitated line style.
James Ensor, a central figure in the development of modern Belgian art, produced this etching as part of his series exploring the Seven Deadly Sins. In this depiction of Avarice, Ensor employs his characteristic grotesque style to critique human greed. The composition features a central figure hunched over a table scattered with coins, surrounded by monstrous, distorted entities that embody the moral decay associated with the sin.
Ensor uses a dense, nervous line quality to create a sense of agitation and unease. The figures possess elongated, skeletal features and exaggerated expressions, typical of the artist's interest in masks and the macabre. An owl, often a symbol of folly or darkness, watches from the upper right, while a figure behind the miser prepares to strike with a hammer, suggesting the violent consequences of such obsession. The background is rendered with quick, hatched strokes, providing a claustrophobic setting that pushes the figures into the foreground.
This work reflects Ensor's cynical view of society and his tendency to use caricature to expose human failings. By stripping away the veneer of respectability, he presents a raw, unsettling vision of moral corruption. The etching demonstrates his technical proficiency with the needle, allowing for a high degree of detail within a small format. It remains a clear example of his ability to blend traditional printmaking techniques with a deeply personal, often disturbing, visual language. The work is signed and dated by the artist in the lower margin, confirming its place within his mature period of graphic production.
