A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Gérard Audran, depicting a dramatic scene from the rescue of the infant Pyrrhus.
This engraving by Gérard Audran depicts a segment of the classical narrative concerning the rescue of the infant Pyrrhus. Audran, a master of the burin, was commissioned to translate the grand compositions of Nicolas Poussin into print. This work demonstrates the technical precision required to replicate the dramatic tension and anatomical rigour characteristic of the French classical tradition.
The scene captures a moment of urgent movement. Figures in the foreground are rendered with muscular definition, their postures conveying the physical exertion of the rescue. The composition utilises a diagonal arrangement to guide the eye from the foreground action toward the background, where riders and classical architecture establish the setting. The use of hatching and cross-hatching creates a sense of volume and depth, allowing the light to model the forms against the darker, atmospheric sky.
Audran was instrumental in the dissemination of Poussin's aesthetic across Europe. By converting oil paintings into monochrome prints, he made these complex historical narratives accessible to a wider audience of collectors and scholars. The attention to detail in the drapery, the facial expressions, and the architectural elements reflects the rigorous training of the period. This print is a study in the translation of painterly values into the medium of engraving, maintaining the narrative clarity and emotional weight of the original composition. The inclusion of Latin text at the base provides the necessary historical context for the viewer, aligning with the educational aims of seventeenth-century print culture.
