A powerful woodcut from the War series by Käthe Kollwitz, depicting a mother offering her child in a gesture of grief and loss.

The Sacrifice is a woodcut from the War (Krieg) series, a collection of seven prints produced by Käthe Kollwitz in the early 1920s. This work reflects the artist's personal response to the trauma of the First World War, during which she lost her son, Peter. The composition focuses on a mother figure holding a child aloft, a gesture that suggests both an offering and a desperate attempt to protect the vulnerable from an unseen threat. Kollwitz employs the woodcut medium to create stark, high-contrast imagery. The heavy black masses of the background press against the figures, while the white areas define the forms through rough, angular gouges. This technique removes unnecessary detail, allowing the emotional weight of the subject to occupy the entire frame. The mother's expression is one of resignation and grief, her body rendered with simplified, muscular lines that convey physical and psychological exhaustion. Unlike many of her contemporaries who focused on the battlefield, Kollwitz directed her attention toward the domestic consequences of conflict. She examined the grief of those left behind, specifically mothers and children. The figures in this print lack individualised features, which allows them to function as universal symbols of loss. The circular framing of the light behind the figures creates a halo-like effect, contrasting with the grim reality of the subject matter. This print remains a clear example of the artist's ability to communicate complex human suffering through minimal visual means. The raw, unrefined nature of the woodcut process aligns with the gravity of the theme, ensuring the viewer confronts the subject without distraction.
