An Impressionist oil painting by Konstantin Korovin depicting a sunlit street in a southern town. The work uses thick brushstrokes and a palette of lavender and grey.
Konstantin Korovin was a leading figure in Russian Impressionism. This work depicts a sun-bleached street in a southern town, likely in the Crimea where the artist spent much of his time. The composition uses a palette of lavender and cool grey with stark white to convey the light of midday. The application of paint is thick and gestural. Korovin used broad strokes to define the architecture and the rocky terrain. The buildings on the left are rendered with flat planes of white and pale yellow to indicate the reflection of heat. In the background, the mountains merge with the sky through a series of horizontal marks in varying shades of violet and blue. Korovin studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. His style moved away from the detailed realism of the Peredvizhniki towards a spontaneous approach. This painting shows his interest in capturing immediate atmospheric effects rather than precise architectural detail. The vertical lines of the telegraph poles provide a structural counterpoint to the loose handling of the road and sky. The work establishes a sense of place through colour and light. The shadows are not black but are composed of deep blues and purples, a technique common to Impressionist practice. This piece is characteristic of his later period when his brushwork became increasingly abstract and energetic.
