Konstantin Korovin was a leading figure in Russian Impressionism. This work depicts a sun-bleached street in a southern town, likely in the Crimea where the artist spent much of his time. Korovin used broad strokes to define the architecture and the rocky terrain. The buildings on the left are rendered with flat planes of white and pale yellow to indicate the reflection of heat. In the background, the mountains merge with the sky through a series of horizontal marks in varying shades of violet and blue. Korovin studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. His style moved away from the detailed realism of the Peredvizhniki towards a spontaneous approach.
