Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, produced this view of the Grand Canal during the height of his career in Venice. The composition captures the Rialto Bridge from a southern vantage point, allowing for a clear perspective of the stone arch and the surrounding palazzi. Canaletto was a master of the veduta, or view painting, a genre that gained popularity among European travellers on the Grand Tour.
