A sombre, atmospheric oil painting by José Gutiérrez Solana, capturing a group of men at a table with heavy brushwork and dramatic lighting.
José Gutiérrez Solana was a Spanish painter and writer known for his preoccupation with the darker, more grotesque aspects of Spanish life. In this work, he depicts a sombre gathering, capturing a specific social atmosphere through heavy brushwork and a restricted, earthy palette. The scene centres on a group of men seated around a table, their faces etched with weariness and gravity. A central figure stands, raising a glass, while a large, conical pastry sits at the middle of the table, acting as a curious anchor for the composition. Solana avoids idealisation, preferring to document the stark reality of his subjects. The lighting is low and dramatic, casting deep shadows that obscure the corners of the room and focus the viewer on the expressions of the men. His technique involves thick, impasto applications of paint, which give the figures a sculptural, almost rugged quality. This approach reflects his interest in the traditions and social conditions of early twentieth-century Spain, often focusing on the rituals of the working class and the bourgeoisie alike. The presence of a dog beneath the table adds a domestic, grounded element to the otherwise formal setting. Solana’s work is frequently compared to the later periods of Goya, particularly the Black Paintings, due to his use of chiaroscuro and his unflinching gaze at the human condition. This print captures the texture of the original oil painting, preserving the heavy application of pigment and the sombre mood that defines Solana's output. It is a piece that invites quiet observation, revealing more of its character upon repeated viewings.
