A seminal Post-Impressionist work by Vincent van Gogh, capturing the autumn grape harvest in Arles with expressive brushwork and a bold, warm palette.
Painted in November 1888, The Red Vineyard depicts workers harvesting grapes near Arles in the south of France. Vincent van Gogh produced this work during his stay in the Yellow House, a period marked by intense creative output and his correspondence with Paul Gauguin. The composition captures the late autumn sun, which appears as a pale, luminous disc above the horizon, casting a yellow glow across the fields and the reflective surface of the water.
The application of paint is characteristic of the artist's later style, featuring thick, directional brushstrokes that define the forms of the figures and the texture of the vines. The palette relies on the contrast between the warm, fiery reds and oranges of the vineyard and the cooler blues and greens of the workers' clothing and the distant foliage. This juxtaposition creates a sense of movement and energy within the scene.
Van Gogh observed the harvest while walking near the Montmajour Abbey. He wrote to his brother Theo about the specific quality of the light and the colour of the ground, which appeared violet in the shadows. The painting is notable for being the only work by the artist sold during his lifetime, purchased by the painter Anna Boch at the Les XX exhibition in Brussels in 1890. It remains a primary example of his ability to translate subjective experience into a structured, colour-driven visual language. The work avoids the rigid perspective of academic painting, opting instead for a flattened, expressive arrangement that prioritises the emotional weight of the colour over strict anatomical or spatial accuracy. The figures are integrated into the environment, their forms simplified to function as elements within the broader chromatic scheme of the harvest.
