Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, produced this work during the early phase of his career. It depicts the arrival of the French ambassador, Jacques-Vincent Languet, Comte de Gergy, at the Doge's Palace in Venice. The scene captures the ceremonial grandeur of the Venetian Republic, with the ambassador's ornate barge, the Bucintoro, positioned near the Molo.

The composition employs a wide perspective, typical of the veduta style, which Canaletto helped to define. The Doge's Palace occupies the right side of the frame, its Gothic arcades rendered with precise attention to architectural detail. To the left, the basin of San Marco opens up, revealing the distant silhouette of the Santa Maria della Salute. The sky is filled with heavy, atmospheric clouds, a common feature in his early works, which provide a dramatic contrast to the sunlit stone of the palace facade.

Crowds of figures populate the quay, their presence adding a sense of scale and narrative activity to the formal setting. Canaletto uses a controlled palette of ochres, greys, and muted blues to unify the scene. The light appears to emanate from the left, casting soft shadows across the steps and the water.
