A refined chiaroscuro woodcut by Nicolas Le Sueur, depicting the classical myth of Europa and the bull after a design by Paolo Farinati.
This chiaroscuro woodcut by Nicolas Le Sueur depicts the classical myth of the Rape of Europa. The composition is based on a design by the Italian painter Paolo Farinati, as indicated by the inscription at the base of the print. Le Sueur, a master of the woodcut medium, employs a sophisticated layering of tones to create volume and depth, a technique characteristic of the chiaroscuro style popular in the eighteenth century.
The scene captures the moment Zeus, disguised as a bull, carries Europa away. A putto hovers above, while a satyr plays a pipe to the right, adding a pastoral element to the mythological narrative. The figures are rendered with fluid, calligraphic lines that define their forms against the muted background. The use of light and shadow, achieved through multiple woodblocks, provides a sculptural quality to the figures, particularly in the musculature of the bull and the drapery of Europa's garments.
Nicolas Le Sueur was part of a family of engravers who contributed significantly to the reproduction of Old Master drawings. His work often involved translating the painterly qualities of original sketches into the graphic medium of the woodcut. This particular print demonstrates his ability to maintain the spontaneity of Farinati's original design while adapting it to the technical requirements of the printing press. The arched frame suggests the work was intended to mimic the appearance of a finished painting or a decorative panel. This print offers a clear view into the methods used by eighteenth-century printmakers to disseminate classical imagery to a wider audience, preserving the aesthetic values of the Renaissance and Baroque periods through the refined lens of the Rococo era.
