A study of light and atmosphere, this work by James Charles depicts the quiet ramparts of Montreuil with soft, painterly brushwork.
James Charles, a member of the New English Art Club, produced this work during his period of engagement with French plein air painting. The Ramparts of Montreuil captures a view from the historic fortifications of the French town, looking out across the surrounding countryside. Charles employs a muted palette, characteristic of his interest in the atmospheric conditions of Northern France. The composition is framed by the heavy, dark foliage of trees in the foreground, which create a natural archway. This framing device draws the eye towards the lighter, more expansive horizon beyond the stone wall.
Figures are visible along the rampart walk, rendered with loose, economical brushwork that suggests their presence without excessive detail. The light is soft and diffused, typical of an overcast day, allowing for subtle tonal transitions rather than harsh contrasts. The paint application is textured, reflecting the artist's focus on the tactile quality of the surface. Charles was known for his ability to capture the quiet, everyday character of rural life, and this piece is a clear example of his approach to observation. The work avoids dramatic narrative, instead presenting a moment of stillness within a historic setting. The balance between the shadowed foreground and the open, airy distance provides a sense of depth that is both grounded and atmospheric. This print captures the nuanced colour shifts and the painterly quality of the original oil work, maintaining the integrity of the artist's technique.
