A detailed sixteenth-century etching depicting the Prodigal Son tending to swine, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of the Northern Renaissance.
This etching by Abraham de Bruyn depicts a scene from the biblical parable of the Prodigal Son. The composition is contained within a circular frame, a common format for small-scale prints of the period. The central figure, the Prodigal Son, kneels in a state of destitution, tending to a group of swine at a feeding trough. His posture and ragged appearance communicate his fall from grace, a visual shorthand for the moral narrative familiar to sixteenth-century audiences.
De Bruyn employs a precise, linear technique to define the forms. The background features a modest rural setting, complete with a windmill and distant structures, which grounds the spiritual allegory in the everyday reality of the Low Countries. The artist uses cross-hatching to create depth and texture, particularly in the rendering of the animals and the foliage of the tree under which the figure kneels. The inclusion of a small dog near the trough adds a touch of domestic observation to the scene.
As a printmaker active in Antwerp, de Bruyn produced works that circulated widely among collectors and scholars. This piece reflects the technical standards of the period, where the clarity of the line was paramount for conveying narrative detail in a compact format. The print is signed with the artist's initials, 'Abr. fe.', indicating his role as the creator of the plate. This work offers a glimpse into the thematic preoccupations of the Northern Renaissance, where religious subjects were frequently interpreted through the lens of contemporary rural life.
