An 18th-century etching by Jean Moyreau after Philips Wouwerman, depicting a detailed hunting scene with figures and horses in a classical setting.
This fine etching and engraving by Jean Moyreau, dated 1738, reproduces a painting by the Dutch master Philips Wouwerman. Moyreau was a prolific printmaker who dedicated much of his career to translating the works of Wouwerman into the medium of engraving, often for the collection of the Duc d'Orléans. The print captures a busy scene of hunters and their horses gathered near a stone structure adorned with a classical statue.
The composition is typical of the period, balancing human activity with architectural and natural elements. In the foreground, figures interact with horses, while a dog rests near a fallen game animal. The background reveals a distant town, rendered with fine lines that suggest atmospheric depth. The inclusion of a coat of arms at the bottom centre indicates the work was commissioned or dedicated to a high-ranking patron, a common practice for printmakers of the eighteenth century.
Moyreau employs a variety of hatching techniques to differentiate textures, from the rough stone of the archway to the soft coats of the horses and the foliage of the trees. The light is managed to guide the viewer across the scene, moving from the detailed foreground activity to the more subdued, airy distance. This print provides a clear example of how European printmakers disseminated the styles of earlier Dutch painters to a wider audience, maintaining the narrative quality of the original while adapting it to the monochromatic constraints of the copper plate. The work remains a precise record of the aesthetic preferences of the French aristocracy during the mid-eighteenth century.
