A classic yakusha-e woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga, depicting actors in a theatrical scene with a cottage background.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga depicts two figures in a theatrical setting, characteristic of the yakusha-e genre. Shigenaga was a significant figure in the early development of ukiyo-e, operating in Edo during the first half of the eighteenth century. He is known for his work in the benizuri-e style, which utilised a limited palette of pink and green pigments applied to the monochrome print.
The composition features a male actor, identifiable by his swords and elaborate kimono, standing alongside a female figure who holds a large umbrella. In the background, a small cottage is perched on a rocky outcrop, providing a sense of place. The figures are rendered with the stylised elegance typical of the period, focusing on the graceful lines of their garments and their expressive postures. The print demonstrates the early techniques of colour application in Japanese woodblock printing, where blocks were carved to apply specific hues to the paper.
Shigenaga was a teacher to several later masters, including Harunobu, and his influence on the technical progression of the medium is documented in historical surveys of Japanese art. The work captures the intersection of kabuki theatre and popular culture, presenting actors as icons of the floating world. The use of line is precise, defining the folds of the fabric and the architectural elements of the cottage. This print provides a view into the aesthetic priorities of the Edo period, where the depiction of actors was a primary subject for artists and a popular commodity for the urban public. The preservation of the original colouration allows for an appreciation of the subtle balance between the printed line and the hand-applied or block-printed colour fields.
