A study of autumn light and colour, this impressionist work by T. C. Steele captures the golden foliage of poplars in the Indiana countryside.
Theodore Clement Steele, a central figure of the Hoosier Group, produced this work during his later years in Brown County, Indiana. The painting captures the specific light and colour of an autumn day. Steele employs a technique of broken brushstrokes, which allows the surface of the canvas to shimmer with the golden hues of the turning poplar leaves. The composition draws the eye through the foreground foliage toward a distant, hazy horizon, creating a sense of depth that is characteristic of his plein air approach.
Steele moved to Brown County in 1907, seeking the quietude of the rural environment. This shift in location allowed him to observe the changing seasons with greater frequency. In this piece, the application of paint is textured and deliberate, reflecting his interest in the atmospheric qualities of the Midwestern light. The palette is dominated by warm yellows, ochres, and burnt oranges, contrasted against the cool, pale blue of the sky. By focusing on the interplay between the trees and the light, Steele documents the natural environment of his home without resorting to idealisation. The work remains a clear example of his technical proficiency and his dedication to capturing the immediate visual experience of the natural world.
