A detailed etching by Charles François Daubigny, depicting two stags at a woodland pool, rendered with fine line work and atmospheric depth.
Charles François Daubigny, a central figure of the Barbizon School, produced this etching during a period when he sought to capture the quietude of the French countryside. His work often involved direct observation of nature, a practice that influenced the later Impressionist movement. This composition depicts a secluded woodland pool, where two stags stand near the water's edge. The scene is framed by dense foliage and weeping willows, which create a sense of enclosure and stillness.
Daubigny utilised the etching medium to explore tonal variation and texture. The fine, cross-hatched lines define the shadows beneath the trees and the reflective surface of the water. The stags are rendered with precision, their forms mirrored in the pool, which serves as the visual centre of the work. The artist's ability to convey the atmosphere of the forest, from the light filtering through the canopy to the texture of the bark, demonstrates his technical mastery of the printmaking process. Unlike his oil paintings, which often feature broader brushwork, this etching relies on the density of line to build depth and volume. The inclusion of a distant stag in the background adds a sense of scale to the woodland setting. This print offers a glimpse into the artist's preoccupation with the natural world, reflecting his preference for unadorned, observational subjects over the grand historical narratives common in the academic art of his time. The work remains a fine example of nineteenth-century French printmaking, capturing a fleeting moment of calm in the wild.
