Du Jin, a scholar-painter active during the Ming Dynasty, produced this work depicting the Northern Song poet Lin Bu. Lin Bu is celebrated for his reclusive life on the shores of West Lake, where he famously eschewed official office in favour of cultivating plum blossoms and keeping cranes. This subject matter reflects the literati ideal of the scholar who finds contentment in nature and solitude.
The composition employs a restrained ink palette, characteristic of the period's focus on brushwork and atmospheric depth. The figure of the poet stands in the foreground, his posture relaxed as he holds a staff. He is positioned near a gnarled, ancient tree, a common motif in Chinese painting that signifies resilience and longevity. The surrounding rocks and foliage are rendered with fluid, calligraphic strokes, suggesting the quiet stillness of a moonlit evening. The wash techniques create a sense of soft, diffused light, grounding the figure within the natural environment.
In the upper left, an inscription provides context, linking the visual elements to the poetic tradition of the era.
