A late work by Vincent van Gogh, capturing the expansive fields of Auvers-sur-Oise through rhythmic, textured brushwork and a palette of cool greens and golden wheat.
Painted during the final months of his life in Auvers-sur-Oise, this work captures the expansive agricultural fields surrounding the village. Van Gogh employed his characteristic impasto technique, applying paint in thick, rhythmic strokes that animate the surface of the canvas. The composition is divided into distinct horizontal bands: a foreground of tall, pale green grasses, a middle ground of varied crops, and a distant horizon line marked by a thin row of trees.
The sky occupies a significant portion of the frame, filled with swirling, rounded clouds rendered in shades of white and cerulean blue. These forms echo the movement of the wind across the fields below. The colour palette relies on a contrast between the cool, pale greens of the foreground and the warmer, golden tones of the ripening wheat in the distance. Small touches of red, likely poppies, provide a subtle counterpoint to the dominant green and blue hues.
Van Gogh produced several views of the Auvers plains during the summer of 1890. This specific iteration focuses on the texture of the vegetation and the atmospheric quality of the open countryside. The application of paint remains visible throughout, creating a physical depth that draws the eye across the breadth of the field. By avoiding fine detail in favour of expressive brushwork, the artist conveys the sensation of being present in the open air. The work remains a primary example of his late style, where colour and stroke work together to define the character of the French rural environment.
