An evocative scene of Edwardian leisure, capturing a group enjoying a picnic beneath the dappled light of an orchard.
James Charles, a painter associated with the New English Art Club, produced this work in the final year of his life. The composition captures a scene of domestic leisure, set within the dappled light of an orchard. Charles employs a technique characterised by broken brushwork, which allows the light filtering through the canopy to animate the grass and the clothing of the figures.
The scene depicts a group of children and adults engaged in an outdoor meal. To the left, figures are seated upon a white cloth, while others stand or move through the space. A small dog occupies the foreground, providing a sense of scale and movement. The artist focuses on the interplay between the deep shadows cast by the trees and the bright patches of sunlight that illuminate the meadow.
Charles was known for his interest in plein air painting, a practice that encouraged artists to observe the effects of natural light directly. This work reflects his technical approach, where form is defined by colour and light rather than rigid outlines. The palette is dominated by earthy greens, ochres, and soft whites, which unify the figures with their environment. The painting offers a glimpse into the social habits of the Edwardian era, documenting a quiet moment of recreation. The artist's ability to render the atmosphere of the orchard demonstrates his technical proficiency in capturing transient conditions. This print reproduces the textures of the original oil paint, maintaining the character of the brushstrokes and the tonal balance of the composition.
