A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicting the biblical scene of the inhabitants of Sodom surrounding Lot's house.
This engraving depicts the biblical narrative from Genesis 19, where the inhabitants of Sodom gather outside the house of Lot. An angel is shown pulling Lot into the safety of the dwelling, while the crowd of men outside remains unaware of the impending divine intervention. The composition follows the conventions of sixteenth-century Flemish printmaking, utilising clear spatial divisions and distinct figures to convey the moral weight of the story.
Hans Collaert the Elder, a member of a prominent family of engravers based in Antwerp, produced this work during a period when biblical illustration was a primary focus for print publishers. The scene is rendered with precise lines, characteristic of the period's technical approach to copperplate engraving. The addition of hand-applied colour provides a visual clarity to the figures, distinguishing the central characters from the surrounding crowd. The architectural elements in the background, including a distant city gate and tower, suggest a contemporary interpretation of the ancient setting, a common practice among artists of the Northern Renaissance.
The inclusion of Latin and French text at the base of the image serves to anchor the visual narrative within its theological context. The print reflects the meticulous attention to detail found in the work of the Antwerp school, where the collaboration between designers and engravers was standard practice. This piece offers a view into the visual culture of the late sixteenth century, where religious narratives were disseminated through accessible, high-quality prints for both private study and public instruction. The work remains a clear example of the technical proficiency achieved by Flemish printmakers during this era, balancing narrative clarity with the stylistic rigour of the time.
