A detailed seventeenth-century engraving depicting the remorseful Saint Peter, complete with traditional attributes and Latin inscriptions.
This engraving depicts the biblical figure of Saint Peter in a moment of profound remorse. The composition draws upon the narrative of Peter denying Christ, indicated by the presence of the cockerel perched upon a rock to the left. The artist employs a sophisticated use of line to define the texture of the saint's garments, the rugged terrain, and the foliage overhead. The inclusion of the keys, a traditional attribute of Saint Peter, rests in the foreground, serving as a reminder of his role as the gatekeeper of heaven.
Van Swanenburg was a skilled engraver working within the Dutch tradition of the early seventeenth century. His work often involved translating the designs of other artists into print, a common practice for disseminating religious and moralising imagery during this period. The technical precision seen here reflects the high standards of Dutch printmaking, where cross-hatching and varied line weights create a sense of volume and atmosphere. The Latin inscription at the base provides context for the scene, framing the image as a meditation on repentance and divine forgiveness.
The figure of Peter is rendered with a sense of emotional weight, his posture conveying a heavy burden of conscience. The surrounding environment, while stylised, provides a grounding for the narrative, with the tree and rocky outcrop creating a natural enclosure for the saint. This print is a fine example of the technical mastery achieved by Dutch engravers of the era, who balanced narrative clarity with decorative refinement. It remains a compelling study of human emotion captured through the disciplined medium of the copperplate engraving, offering a window into the religious sensibilities of the Dutch Golden Age.
