A masterful study of light and shadow, this Baroque painting depicts Mary Magdalene in quiet contemplation before a candle and a mirror.
Georges de La Tour, a master of the French Baroque, created several versions of this subject. This specific composition, often referred to as the 'Magdalen with the Smoking Flame', demonstrates his command of chiaroscuro. The scene is defined by a single light source, a candle, which casts a warm glow across the figure of Mary Magdalene while leaving much of the surrounding space in deep shadow. Mary Magdalene sits in profile, her gaze directed toward the candle flame reflected in a mirror. Her hands rest upon a skull, a traditional memento mori symbolising the transience of life and the inevitability of death. The contrast between the illuminated white blouse and the deep red skirt creates a visual anchor for the viewer. The artist simplifies the forms, reducing the composition to essential geometric shapes and smooth surfaces, which lends the work a quiet, meditative quality. Unlike many of his contemporaries who favoured dramatic movement, La Tour opts for stillness. The reflection of the candle in the mirror provides a secondary light source, adding a layer of technical complexity to the work. The discarded jewellery on the table serves as a further reminder of the vanity of worldly possessions, a common theme in seventeenth-century religious art. The painting avoids excessive detail, allowing the play of light and shadow to dictate the mood. This approach creates a sense of intimacy and introspection, inviting the viewer to contemplate the subject's internal state rather than her external surroundings. The work remains a primary example of the artist's ability to transform a traditional religious narrative into a study of light, form, and human reflection.
