This miniature painting originates from the Tuti-nama, or Tales of a Parrot, a collection of fifty-two stories narrated by a parrot to his mistress, Khujasta. The manuscript was commissioned during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. It represents an early phase of the Mughal school, where Persian stylistic conventions merge with indigenous Indian traditions. The composition is divided into two distinct sections. The upper portion contains Persian calligraphy, providing the narrative context for the scene below. The lower section depicts an interior setting where Khujasta stands before a golden cage containing the parrot. The architectural elements, such as the arched doorway and the domed roofline, reflect the aesthetic of the period. The colour palette is dominated by muted earth tones, soft pinks, and gold accents, which are characteristic of the manuscript's production. Dasavanta, a painter active in the imperial workshop, is credited with this work. His approach demonstrates a focus on narrative clarity and the integration of figures within their environment. The parrot, positioned centrally within the cage, acts as the primary interlocutor. Khujasta is rendered in traditional attire, her posture suggesting a moment of engagement with the bird. The use of gold leaf and fine brushwork indicates the high status of the manuscript, which was intended for the royal library.
