A 19th-century albumen print by the Fratelli Alinari studio, documenting the 14th-century fresco of The Paradise by Andrea Orcagna in Florence.
This albumen print by the Fratelli Alinari studio captures the fresco of The Paradise, originally painted by Andrea Orcagna in the Strozzi Chapel of the Santa Maria Novella in Florence. The Alinari brothers, pioneers in the field of photographic documentation, sought to preserve the visual record of Italian art history through high-quality reproductions of frescoes, sculptures, and architecture.
Orcagna’s original fresco, dating to the mid-14th century, depicts a celestial hierarchy. Christ and the Virgin Mary occupy the central throne, surrounded by tiers of saints, prophets, and angels. The composition follows the rigid, hierarchical structure common to Trecento religious art, where the scale of figures often denotes their spiritual status. The photographic process employed here translates the muted tones of the aged fresco into a sepia-toned monochrome, allowing for a study of the composition and the arrangement of the figures without the distraction of colour.
As a document of 19th-century archival practice, this print reflects the era's desire to catalogue European cultural heritage. The Alinari studio became the primary source for such images, providing scholars and art enthusiasts with access to works that were otherwise difficult to study in situ. The print retains the original mounting, which includes the studio’s identification and the subject matter. It serves as a record of the fresco's condition during the late 19th century, offering a window into the intersection of early photography and art historical preservation.
