A pair of detailed nineteenth-century etchings by Adrian Ludwig Richter, depicting a traditional Tyrolean procession and a village classroom scene.
This print features two distinct etchings by the German artist Adrian Ludwig Richter. The upper scene, titled 'Aufzug der Tiroler', depicts a procession of figures in traditional Tyrolean attire, moving through a village setting with a church in the background. The lower scene, 'Das Innere einer Dorfschule', captures a classroom environment from 1836. A schoolmaster stands at the centre, gesturing towards a group of children, while other pupils are engaged in various tasks at their desks. The room is filled with period-specific furniture, including wooden benches and a stove.
Richter was a prominent figure in the Biedermeier period, a time when German art shifted towards domesticity, rural life, and historical narrative. His work is characterised by a precise, linear approach to etching, which allows for the clear articulation of architectural details and human expression. The compositions reflect a keen interest in the social structures of the nineteenth century, documenting both public celebrations and the private, structured world of education.
These etchings demonstrate Richter's ability to organise complex scenes within a limited space. The use of hatching and cross-hatching creates depth and texture, defining the wooden interiors and the varied fabrics of the clothing. By presenting these two scenes together, the print offers a glimpse into the cultural and social fabric of the era. The artist maintains a balanced perspective, ensuring that the narrative elements remain clear to the viewer. These works are representative of the mid-nineteenth-century interest in genre painting, where the focus lies on the observation of everyday life and the preservation of regional customs. The clarity of the line work and the attention to historical detail provide a window into the past, documenting the customs and educational practices of the time with technical precision.
