A detailed 16th-century engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicting the biblical Parable of the Wicked Husbandmen with narrative precision.
This engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicts the biblical Parable of the Wicked Husbandmen. The composition is structured around a central stone tower, which serves as the focal point for the narrative action. The vineyard is enclosed by woven fencing, creating a distinct spatial boundary that separates the agricultural setting from the surrounding open terrain.
Collaert employs a high vantage point, allowing the viewer to observe multiple stages of the narrative simultaneously. In the foreground, the husbandmen are shown attacking the son of the vineyard owner, a scene rendered with anatomical precision and dramatic tension. Further back, near the tower, other figures engage in conflict, illustrating the escalating violence described in the Gospel of Luke. The artist uses fine, controlled lines to define the textures of the stone, the foliage of the vines, and the musculature of the figures.
As a member of the prominent Collaert family of engravers in Antwerp, Hans Collaert the Elder was instrumental in the production of high-quality prints that disseminated religious and moralising themes across Europe. His work reflects the technical mastery common among Flemish printmakers of the sixteenth century, who balanced narrative clarity with decorative detail. The Latin inscription at the base provides the scriptural context, linking the visual imagery directly to the text of Luke 20. This print is a characteristic example of the period's interest in combining theological instruction with classical artistic conventions, resulting in a work that functions as both a devotional aid and a demonstration of technical skill in the medium of copperplate engraving.
