A masterful Baroque interpretation of the biblical parable, capturing a moment of moral instruction through expressive gesture and dramatic light.
Domenico Fetti, a Roman painter active in Mantua, produced this work as part of a series depicting the parables of Christ. The composition illustrates the biblical passage from the Gospel of Matthew, where a man is cautioned against judging the minor faults of others while ignoring his own significant failings. Fetti employs a direct, almost theatrical approach to the subject, placing the figures within a ruined architectural setting that frames the interaction.
The artist uses a loose, painterly technique that reflects the influence of Venetian masters such as Titian and Veronese. The light is handled with a sense of immediacy, casting long shadows and creating a clear distinction between the two figures. The man on the left, seated and gesturing, addresses the younger man opposite him. A large wooden beam extends from the masonry, serving as a literal and metaphorical device to represent the hypocrisy described in the text. The muted colour palette, dominated by earth tones, ochres, and deep browns, focuses the viewer on the expressive gestures and the psychological tension between the two characters.
Fetti was known for his small-scale cabinet paintings, which were intended for private contemplation rather than public display in large churches. This work demonstrates his ability to translate complex theological concepts into accessible, human-centred scenes. The rough textures of the stone and the fluid application of paint on the clothing reveal his interest in the material qualities of the medium. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Fetti ensures the narrative remains the primary focus of the composition. This print captures the atmospheric quality of the original panel, preserving the subtle tonal shifts and the dramatic interplay of light that define Fetti's mature style.
