An illustration by Howard Pyle, 'The Old Violin' depicts an elderly man playing the violin in an open window, with pigeons perched on the roof below. The muted colour palette and narrative quality are characteristic of Pyle's style.
Howard Pyle was an American illustrator and author, best known for his adventure stories and his illustrations, particularly of pirates. He is considered one of the most important figures in the development of American illustration. He founded what became known as the Brandywine School, a style of illustration focused on historical subjects and romantic themes. Pyle's influence can be seen in the work of many later illustrators. In this illustration, an elderly man with spectacles plays the violin in an open window. Below him, on the roof, three pigeons are perched. The composition is divided between the dark interior scene and the brighter exterior. The colour palette is muted, dominated by greys and blacks, with touches of white and cream. The scene has a narrative quality, typical of Pyle's work, inviting the viewer to imagine the story behind the image.
