A woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro, depicting the courtesan Yoyogiku of the Matsubaya house with attendants under a cherry tree. The artwork exemplifies Utamaro's skill in portraying the beauty of women in Edo-period Japan.
This woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) depicts the courtesan (oiran) Yoyogiku of the Matsubaya house, accompanied by attendants, beneath a blossoming cherry tree. Utamaro was a leading designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings, active from the 1770s until his death. He is known especially for his bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women). He captured refined beauty and fashionable elegance in his portraits of courtesans and geisha. The print shows Yoyogiku in an elaborate patterned kimono, standing with a contemplative expression. An attendant holds a parasol over her, while another kneels, arranging her geta (wooden sandals). The cherry blossoms overhead add a seasonal, ephemeral quality to the scene. The composition, with its emphasis on line and flat planes of colour, is typical of ukiyo-e. The print exemplifies Utamaro's skill in portraying the beauty and status of women in Edo-period Japan.
