A refined ukiyo-e woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi, featuring the high-ranking courtesan Segawa and her attendants in elegant, patterned kimonos.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicts the high-ranking courtesan Segawa of the Matsubaya house, accompanied by her attendants. Eishi, a former painter in the service of the Tokugawa shogunate, transitioned to printmaking in the late eighteenth century. His work is recognised for its elongated, graceful figures and a refined aesthetic that departed from the more robust styles of his contemporaries.
The composition follows the bijin-ga tradition, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women. Segawa is shown in the centre, flanked by two younger kamuro (attendants). The figures are arranged with a sense of rhythmic balance, their layered kimonos displaying a variety of geometric and floral patterns. The artist employs a muted colour palette, relying on subtle contrasts between the dark robes and the pale, expressive faces of the women. The fine lines used to delineate the hair and the folds of the fabric demonstrate the technical precision of the woodblock carving process.
Eishi was known for his ability to capture the poise and social status of the Yoshiwara courtesans. In this print, the focus remains on the elegance of the subjects and the decorative quality of their attire. The absence of a complex background allows the viewer to concentrate on the posture and the interaction between the figures. This print is a representative example of the artist's mature style, which favoured a sense of calm and aristocratic detachment. The work provides a clear view into the fashion and social hierarchy of the Edo period, presented through the lens of a master of the ukiyo-e genre.
