A Meiji-era woodblock triptych by Ogata Gekko depicting a strategic moment during the Russo-Japanese War at Port Arthur.
This woodblock print by Ogata Gekko depicts a scene from the Russo-Japanese War, specifically the capture of the battery at Port Arthur. Gekko, a self-taught artist who gained recognition for his work during the Meiji period, produced this triptych to document the military actions of the Imperial Japanese Army. The composition is divided across three panels, showing a high-ranking officer surveying the coastal terrain as the sun rises over the horizon.
The visual narrative focuses on the strategic position of the Japanese forces. To the right, soldiers are gathered near tents, with smoke rising from the encampment, suggesting the recent intensity of the conflict. The officer stands in the foreground, his posture calm and authoritative, contrasting with the rugged, uneven ground beneath his feet. The use of colour is restrained, relying on soft gradients in the sky and muted earth tones for the landscape, which allows the red of the rising sun and the orange accents on the officer's uniform to draw the eye.
Unlike earlier ukiyo-e traditions that focused on theatre or folklore, this work belongs to the genre of senso-e, or war prints. These prints were produced in large numbers to satisfy public demand for news and imagery from the front lines. Gekko employs a combination of traditional woodblock techniques and Western-influenced perspective, a common stylistic shift during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Japan. The print captures a moment of transition, both in the geopolitical sense and in the artistic methods employed by Japanese printmakers of the era. The clean lines and balanced composition reflect Gekko's ability to organise complex military scenes into a coherent visual format, providing a record of the historical events as they were perceived by the Japanese public at the time.
