A moody, atmospheric nocturne by Kimon Loghi, featuring dense forest foliage rendered with heavy impasto and a deep, shadowed palette.
Kimon Loghi, a Romanian painter of Greek descent, produced this work during a period when his practice shifted towards atmospheric and symbolic representations of nature. In 'The Night', the artist employs a heavy impasto technique, building up layers of pigment to create a tactile surface that captures the elusive quality of darkness. The composition focuses on a dense cluster of trees, rendered in deep shadows and muted tones, which obscure the background and create a sense of enclosure.
The palette is dominated by dark blues, forest greens, and earthy browns, punctuated by subtle hints of light that suggest the presence of a moon or distant illumination filtering through the canopy. Loghi avoids precise detail, opting instead for a suggestive approach that prioritises mood over literal representation. The thick application of paint gives the foliage a sculptural quality, where the texture itself becomes a primary element of the visual experience.
This piece reflects the broader European interest in the nocturne, a genre that gained popularity through the works of artists such as James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Loghi uses the darkness not merely as a setting, but as a subject in its own right, exploring the psychological weight of the nocturnal environment. The lack of human presence or narrative markers encourages the viewer to engage directly with the sensory qualities of the scene. By focusing on the interplay between shadow and the faint suggestion of form, Loghi creates an image that feels both grounded in the physical world and detached from it. The work remains a characteristic example of his later style, where the focus on light and texture takes precedence over traditional academic structure.
