This woodblock print originates from the Supplementary Volume of the Nantei Picture Album (Nantei gafu kōhen), published in 1804. Nishimura Nantei, a Kyoto-based artist associated with the Shijo school, produced this collection to demonstrate his mastery of brushwork and observation. The Shijo school favoured a naturalistic approach, often focusing on the daily activities of common people and the subtle movements of the natural world.
The composition depicts figures engaged in fishing, rendered with a calligraphic economy of line. Nantei avoids heavy shading or complex textures, relying instead on the expressive potential of the ink stroke to define form and motion. The figures are captured in mid-action, their postures suggesting the physical effort of their task. The background remains largely empty, a characteristic choice that directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between the individuals and their tools.
