Jan Matejko's 'The Murder of St Stanislaus' depicts the assassination of the Bishop of Kraków by the Polish King Bolesław II the Bold. This dramatic oil painting captures the conflict between church and state in a dark and imposing church interior.
Jan Matejko's dramatic oil painting depicts the assassination of Saint Stanislaus of Szczepanów, the Bishop of Kraków, in 1079. Stanislaus was murdered on the orders of the Polish King Bolesław II the Bold, after the bishop had excommunicated the king for his immoral behaviour. The event took place during Mass, as shown by the altar in the background. The painting captures the moment when the king's soldiers carry out the assassination, with Stanislaus lying dead on the altar steps. King Bolesław stands to the left, holding a sword and looking on with a mixture of anger and horror. The scene is set within a dark, imposing church interior, which adds to the drama and solemnity of the event. Matejko's work is characterised by its attention to historical detail and its use of dramatic composition to convey a sense of moral and political commentary. The artist aimed to inspire national pride and reflection on Poland's past. The painting is a powerful representation of the conflict between church and state, and the consequences of unchecked power.
