A fine aquatint reproduction by Maria Catharina Prestel, depicting the legendary Mouth of Truth after an original drawing by Albrecht Altdorfer.
Maria Catharina Prestel was a skilled German printmaker, recognised for her ability to replicate the tonal qualities of drawings through the medium of aquatint. This work is a reproduction of a drawing by Albrecht Altdorfer, dated 1513. It depicts the legend of the Bocca della Verità, or the Mouth of Truth, a marble mask located in Rome. According to folklore, the stone face would bite the hand of any person who told a lie while placing their hand inside its mouth.
In this print, Prestel captures the dramatic tension of the scene. A group of figures stands before the stone lion, with one individual cautiously approaching the sculpture. The architectural setting, defined by a rounded arch and heavy masonry, provides a sense of enclosure. Prestel uses the aquatint process to create soft, atmospheric shadows that mimic the appearance of a wash drawing. The lines are precise, reflecting the original draughtsmanship of the sixteenth-century source material while introducing the specific textural qualities of eighteenth-century printmaking techniques.
The inclusion of the inscription 'Dessin d'Albert Altorfer' at the bottom identifies the source of the composition, a common practice for Prestel, who frequently reproduced works from the Praun collection in Nuremberg. Her technical proficiency allowed her to translate the graphic style of the Northern Renaissance into a format accessible to collectors of her own era. The print demonstrates a careful balance between the original artist's vision and the reproductive capabilities of the aquatint process, resulting in a work that functions as both a historical record and an independent artistic object.
