Description

A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, depicting the calm waters and river traffic at the Nakagawa estuary.

This woodblock print, titled The Mouth of the Nakagawa River, is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. Created by Utagawa Hiroshige in 1857, the work captures a serene moment at the river estuary. The composition employs a high vantage point, allowing the viewer to observe the movement of small boats and rafts navigating the waterway.

The scene is defined by the gentle curves of the riverbank and the rhythmic placement of pine trees. Hiroshige uses a refined colour palette, dominated by soft blues for the water and muted greens for the vegetation. The sky transitions from a pale yellow near the horizon to a deeper indigo at the top of the print, a technique known as bokashi, which provides a sense of atmospheric depth.

Several figures are depicted in the foreground and mid-ground, engaged in the daily labour of river transport. The presence of long, narrow rafts poled by individual workers contrasts with the larger passenger boats, offering a glimpse into the commercial activity of Edo-period Japan. The print demonstrates Hiroshige's ability to organise space through clear, geometric shapes while maintaining a naturalistic feel.

As a late work in the artist's career, this piece reflects his mastery of the woodblock medium. The lines are precise, and the balance between the open water and the detailed banks creates a sense of calm. The cartouches in the upper right corner provide the series title and the specific location, adhering to the standard format for this celebrated collection. This print offers a quiet observation of the relationship between the city of Edo and its surrounding waterways, presented with the technical clarity characteristic of the Ukiyo-e tradition.
