A fine nineteenth-century engraving by Richard Austin Artlett, reproducing John Henry Foley's sculptural group, The Mother.
This fine engraving by Richard Austin Artlett reproduces the sculptural group titled The Mother, originally created by the Irish sculptor John Henry Foley. Artlett was a skilled engraver known for his ability to translate the three-dimensional qualities of marble statuary into the two-dimensional medium of print. His work captures the soft modelling of the figures and the fluid drapery that characterises Foley's original composition.
The scene depicts a mother reclining with two young children. The composition follows the conventions of Victorian Neoclassicism, focusing on idealised forms and a sense of domestic serenity. The mother is shown in a relaxed pose, her body supported by fabric that cascades across the plinth. One child rests against her, while the other is positioned centrally, creating a balanced arrangement of figures. The engraving technique employs subtle hatching and cross-hatching to suggest the smooth texture of stone and the gentle play of light across the forms.
Foley, a member of the Royal Academy, was highly regarded for his public monuments and allegorical figures. This print serves as a record of his sculptural practice, making the aesthetic of mid-nineteenth-century academic art accessible to a wider audience. The print includes the original inscription, identifying both the sculptor and the engraver, which was common practice for such reproductions during the period. The clean, white background emphasises the sculptural quality of the subject, allowing the viewer to focus on the anatomical precision and the tender interaction between the figures. This piece is a representative example of the nineteenth-century tradition of translating major sculptural works into print for collectors and art enthusiasts.
