A stark German Expressionist lithograph by Walter Gramatté depicting the psychological weight of the daily urban commute.
Walter Gramatté was a significant figure within the German Expressionist movement, known for his raw, emotive approach to printmaking. This lithograph, titled The Morning Way to the Office, captures the psychological weight of urban routine in the post-First World War era. The composition features a procession of figures moving through a narrow, claustrophobic street. The buildings lean inward, creating a sense of confinement that mirrors the internal state of the subjects.
Gramatté employs a heavy, gestural application of ink to define the forms. The figures are rendered with exaggerated, mask-like faces and hunched postures, suggesting a weariness born of repetitive labour. The stark contrast between the deep blacks and the textured white of the paper creates a flickering, unstable atmosphere. This technique removes the scene from a literal representation of a morning commute, moving it toward a subjective interpretation of social alienation. The artist avoids clean lines, opting instead for a rough, tactile quality that emphasises the grit of the urban environment.
As a printmaker, Gramatté utilised the lithographic process to achieve a painterly effect, allowing for soft edges and dense, layered shadows. The work reflects the anxieties prevalent in Weimar-era Germany, where the individual often felt subsumed by the machinery of modern life. By focusing on the collective movement of the figures, Gramatté comments on the loss of identity within the city. This piece remains a compelling example of how Expressionist artists used distortion and shadow to convey the emotional reality of their time, rather than merely documenting the physical world. The print is a stark, monochromatic study of human movement and the psychological toll of the daily grind.
