A detailed narrative scene from the St. Ursula Cycle, capturing a complex Venetian harbour setting with figures in period dress.
This work is part of the celebrated St. Ursula Cycle, commissioned for the Scuola di Sant'Orsola in Venice. Vittore Carpaccio demonstrates his mastery of narrative composition, blending religious hagiography with the contemporary architectural and social atmosphere of late fifteenth-century Venice. The scene depicts the arrival of Prince Etherius and his meeting with Saint Ursula, followed by the departure of the pilgrims.
Carpaccio organises the canvas into distinct zones of activity. On the left, the arrival of the prince and his retinue unfolds against a backdrop of fortified towers and rocky outcrops. To the right, the scene shifts to the quayside, where figures in period dress engage in formal greetings and preparations for the voyage. The artist employs a clear, light-filled palette, characteristic of the Venetian school, which allows for the precise rendering of textiles, armour, and the varied expressions of the crowd. The architecture, while imaginative, reflects the Venetian penchant for combining Gothic and classical elements, creating a sense of place that feels both grounded and theatrical.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on singular, static devotional images, Carpaccio treats the canvas as a stage for complex human interaction. The perspective is expansive, drawing the viewer across the harbour towards the ships waiting in the distance. Every figure, from the noblemen in their heavy robes to the sailors on the docks, contributes to the overall rhythm of the narrative. The attention to detail in the costumes and the structural elements of the port provides a window into the visual culture of the period, capturing the spirit of a city defined by its maritime connections and civic pride.
