This work is part of the celebrated St. Ursula Cycle, commissioned for the Scuola di Sant'Orsola in Venice. Vittore Carpaccio demonstrates his mastery of narrative composition, blending religious hagiography with the contemporary architectural and social atmosphere of late fifteenth-century Venice. The scene depicts the arrival of Prince Etherius and his meeting with Saint Ursula, followed by the departure of the pilgrims.

Carpaccio organises the canvas into distinct zones of activity. On the left, the arrival of the prince and his retinue unfolds against a backdrop of fortified towers and rocky outcrops. To the right, the scene shifts to the quayside, where figures in period dress engage in formal greetings and preparations for the voyage.
